HOW OFTEN DO YOU REPEAT THE DOSE OF THE MEDICINE?

“Repetition of the dose depends upon the nature of the disease, e.g. If a patient comes with acute problems with clear cut symptoms, I would prescribe high potencies with repeated doses. If a patient were suffering from a chronic disease of a long duration, I would prescribe infrequent doses of the deep acting anti-miasmatic constitutional drug. This could vary from one dose every week, to a dose every fortnight or every month. The second dose is not repeated as long as the action of the first dose continues. I also sometimes instruct my patients to stop the repetition of the medicine as soon as they noticed a change in the existing symptoms. Once this reaction is achieved, then I do not repeat the medicine. ”

“Acute conditions- frequently. Chronic conditions- intermittently, depending on the reaction of the remedy.”

“Repetition of the doses has a definite philosophy. Understanding of Susceptibility of the patient is essential. This is well written in the chapter of Susceptibility and Immunity by Stuart Close in his book, ‘The Genius of Homeopathy’. One can refer to the chapter on Susceptibility in Dr. M. L. Dhawale’s book, ‘Principles and Practice of Homeopathy’. If the first prescription is correct, then do not disturb the progress till there is improvement. Wait and watch is the best policy. Kent’s 12 observations and Hering’s Law of Direction of Cure, guide one properly. Homeopathic pracice is an integrated one and an understanding of its Philosophy is essential. There can never be any hard and fast rules on frequency of dosages. Each case is different and Individualistic.”

“Differs from case to case. Normally, in acute conditions, we repeat it every four hours. The Constitutional drug in low potency is repeated more frequently (once in a week); higher potency as and when required. Again it can be interrelated with miasms and pathology.”

“It depends on the case- whether acute or chronic and which medicine is being given. In chronic cases, I generally give one or two doses and wait until further medicine is required. In acute cases, I may ask the patient to dissolve the dose in water and repeat in divided doses.”

- Dr. Ramgopal D. Tapadia, Principal of T.S. Homoeopathic Medical College, Amravati for the past 25 years; Member- Central Council of Homoeopathy, Govt. of India. He has presented a paper on Hepatitis B at the LMHI Conference at Seattle, USA in 1997.

“If the action of the dose seems to get exhausted, I repeat.

As long as the patient feels better, you don't need to repeat but when he starts to feel tense again you need to repeat. If the intensity of the state is the same as before, same potency is repeated.

Sometimes the patient has pathology but no dreams. The Pathology gets better with medicine but he now starts having bad dreams, which show the situation. This sleep is disturbed and he is restless. The pathology has improved but the mental state is worse.  This is when the remedy needs repeating.

If, repeatedly the action of the dose is exhausted very soon and one feels the need to repeat the remedy frequently, a higher impotency may be required.

After having given the high potency, the intensity of the state comes down and the high potency does not seem to act any longer, a lower potency of the remedy may be required. In some case with increased pathology and decreased central state I give low potency and repeat often - e.g. OA Knee - give Calc.-fl 30 twice a day everyday.”
